Three-year-old Oskar, in protest against the world around him, stops growing, expressing his anger at the pettiness of adults, the rise of fascism and the reality surrounding him through screaming and playing the drum; his only escape is the circus ring, which shields him from the adult world, where he can share his vision of the world.
