Presentation: “War and Theatre”
15 October 2026, 12:50–13:15, In-Person Session (with translation). Symposium Agenda
Abstract
Looking across human history, we find that war is not an accident. On the contrary, it is a normal state, and it develops in parallel with civilisation. Wars in the civilised world reveal astonishing destruction and tension. Such cruel wars have nevertheless been given many meanings and values by human beings: for bread; for “Helen”; for the homeland; for will; for hegemony; for a purpose; for non-purpose; for “a mole on that person’s face”…
Theatre, precisely in its essence, shares homogeneous attributes with war. The presentation is structured in three parts: I. War Is Theatre (performativity, destructiveness, contingency, discursive interpretation); II. The Relation between Theatre and War (presence, a device directly linked to time, a truly metaphysical activity, the presence of the present has no image); III. Theatre Is Politics (the theatrical experience is one person’s war; human beings stand in truth, not in theatre; theatre is the human being).
