About the lighting design
In Gogol’s “The Government Inspector”, directed by Thomas Moschopoulos, I developed the lighting in close dialogue with the set and its scenographic choices. The overhead ceiling that enclosed the space heightened the sense of entrapment while also consciously limiting the possibility of backlighting. This limitation became part of the lighting language itself, leading me to solutions based on side and frontal angles, pronounced chiaroscuro, and the contrast between warm and cool light. Warm tones converse with the red environment, while cool and sharp white light cut through, creating tension and rupture. In this way, the lighting does not aim to describe a realistic space, but to amplify the play’s irony, grotesquerie, and absurdity.
