Georgios Koukoumas

Lighting Designer, Film Director

A Lighting Designer and Film Director, member of the board of CYCSTAT (OISTAT Cyprus), member of the board of the University of Cyprus Culture Center.

1993-1996: studied at the Higher Cinema and Television School of Lykourgos Stavrakou in Athens, Greece.
2002-2007: studied at the Russian State Institute of Cinema and Theatre (VGIK), Moscow, Russia.

He has worked at “Satiriko Theater” (1990-92, 1995) and “Skala Theater” (1996) as a Lighting Technician. Since 1997, he has worked as a Lighting Technician in the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus. From 2005 to the present, he has been working as the Chief Lighting Technician at the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus.

In 1997 he represented Cyprus in the Biennale of Young Artists in Torino, Italy, with the photographic work “Milo milo milo”.

He designed more than 150 lighting designs for theatre plays.

He produced and directed the following short films:

• “Hellmets” (2009): Best Costumes and Best Photography, Drama Film Festival 2009; Best Short Film, Brest (France) Mediterranean Film Festival 2011.
• “Up or Down” (2012): special critics’ award at the “Radiant Angel” festival in Moscow, Russia, 2013.

In 2007, the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus awarded him for his Lighting Design in the play “Diary of a Madman” by Nikolai Gogol.

In 2011, his work in lighting for the play “Festen” was exhibited in Prague Quadrennial as part of the Cyprus Exhibition.

In 2012, he was selected to present his work as an international guest at the United States Institute of Theatrical Technologies’ annual conference.

In 2013 he led a workshop at the World Stage Design 2013 in Cardiff, UK: a seminar about the lighting in a low-budget site-specific theatre production “Hamlet in 48 hours”.

In 2015 he represented Cyprus at the Prague Quadrennial with the scenographer Elena Katsouri as a curator and co-designer of the Cyprus exhibition and as a lighting designer for the THOC theatre productions “Kalikantzar and Co” (2011) and “Birds” (2014). The Cypriot Exposition was awarded the third prize in the Children’s section.

In 2017 he received a Commendation from the Greek Screenwriters Association for the feature film script “In & Out”.

He was selected and presented his lighting work for the play “Constellations” by Nick Payne at the World Stage Design Exhibition WSD2017 in Taipei, Taiwan.

He won the second World Lighting Design Award for his work on the ancient tragedy “Persians” by Aeschylus at the World Stage Design Exhibition WSD2022 in Calgary, Canada.
