Design for Oedipus Rex
Oedipus Rex, also known as Oedipus the King, is an well-know Athenian tragedy by Sophocles.
It tells the story of Oedipus, the king of Thebes, He was determined to end a plague ravaging in his country and find out the murderer who killed his father，the old king. But what he is unaware of is that he was cursed before his birth that he would kill his father, Laius, and marry his mother, Jocasta. Finally, he finds out that the killer he is looking for is none other than himself. At the end of the play, Jocasta hangs herself, in great horror and shame, while Oedipus, horrified at his patricide and incest, pokes himself blind in despair.
As I read the text, I was drawn to the desperation of Oedipus, who is smart，brave and ambitious, eager to achieve himself but blinded by his fate. It reminds me of nowadays lives, we may not believe in fortune as devout as the ancients, but we are still blind in this world. Our eyes, which are as blind as Oedipus, the only deference is that we are blinded by the new god-commerce, money and cheap goods. In this case ,I designed this Temporary performance space, which is covered with pieces of Chinese commodity and express delivery packadings. I designed a whole performance way and the audience would follow the performers during the whole play. And people outside the space can see part of the play, too. I want to give the audience a grand virtual shock, to make everyone realize that if we think ourselves smart and know our lives well, just think about Oedipus, he is not just a bad-luck ancient, we are also blind as him, even in this contemporary world
